This is one of my favourite sayings.  On a really basic level it means that if you don’t ask for something then you probably won’t get it.  If you want something, step forward, speak up!

On a more subtle level though this aphorism makes me think of a child’s birthday party.  We would never think a small child was ‘bad’ or ‘wrong’ to ask for cake especially when everyone else is getting one.  Of course they want some. They’re a kid! It’s cake! So why should we, as adults, feel like we are not allowed to speak up for our needs?

Sure, sometimes the answer will be ‘No.’ but If you don’t ask, then the answer is always ‘No’ and the shy bairn gets nae cake.
